Sky Smeed was born and raised in an old one-room schoolhouse outside of Chanute Kansas. The first music he heard came from Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, and Van Morrison. Listening to this roots style of music playing on a record player during his childhood has stayed with Sky through his career. It is evident when he takes the stage to share his folk-country tunes of working hard, dogs, love, money, and good times.
After years spent living and playing music in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, the Kansas-based songwriter is currently touring to promote his self-titled fourth album, which was independently released in August 2012. The CD is a spare collection of songs centered around Sky’s guitar playing and rich melodic voice, with echoes of his influences Gillian Welch, Nick Drake, and Townes Van Zandt.
Smeed has shared the stage with Jason Isbell, Eileen Jewell, Chuck Meade, Shooter Jennings, Lowen and Navarro, David Nail, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, and Jesse Klein.
“Sky Smeed’s ability to put a story to song often makes me think of Jim Croce, Steve Forbert, Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown, with a dash of Uncle Tupelo.”
Tim Schaefer, WKZE F.M.
“The blues are a strong presence in Smeed’s latest offering, resulting in nine tracks full of stories and catchy rhythms that make you want to listen!”
“I was driving on a sunny Saturday morning, listening to this fine music over and over, when it occurred to me that Sky Smeed deserves one of my highest compliments: he reminds me of Gram Parsons.”
Chip Withrow, Muses Muse
