The Turtle Island Quartet (TIQ), comprised of David Balakrishnan, violin; Mateusz Smoczy?ski, violin; Benjamin Von Gutzeit, viola; and Mark Summer, cello, has been a singular force in the creation of bold, new trends in chamber music for strings. Winner of the 2006 and most recently the 2008 Grammy award for Best Classical Crossover Album, the Quartet fuses the classical quartet esthetic with contemporary American musical styles. The program, A Solstice Celebration: The Festival of Lights, is a joyous voyage through world holiday music that explores the timeless music that has been an integral part of winter holiday celebrations for centuries.
Turtle Island Quartet’s appearance in Joplin is funded, in part, by Leggett & Platt, and the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.
